New frontiers of care

Our health system faces unique challenges. These include preventable hospital admissions, an ageing population and increasingly expensive medical technologies.

As Australia confronts these growing pressures, Bendigo Hospital offers an exciting – and sustainable – model for the future: one that puts patients in control of their own experience and inspires staff members with the latest communication and collaboration tools.

Empowering patients

Placing access to medical information at patients’ fingertips is one of the most exciting aspects of the new Bendigo Hospital. Freed from physical storage, health records can now be viewed by patients from a bedside portal. According to Robyn Lindsay, Executive Director, Acute Health at Bendigo Health, “You don’t have to be in a metro environment to provide world-class service.”

Building a platform for the future

At Bendigo Hospital, vital clinical information – ranging from doctors’ notes to test results – appears in real time in a patient’s digital record in Azure, creating a single view of every patient’s journey.

Staff members can access the latest data and insights from their mobile devices at any time. They can also predict wider individual and population health trends. And, because the data is always up to date, there’s less risk of error.

Best of all, moving to the cloud is laying the groundwork for further innovation. Bendigo Health is now looking to Internet of Things technologies and diagnostic and wearable devices to improve patient wellbeing at home. Its journey will be one to watch as it continues to build the future of healthcare.
